Here are the songs in no particular order but included in this One Hour Radio Special made famous by Independent Superstars and Hall Of Fame Member Luanne Hunt

Solace in the Wind

My husband Steve wrote this delightful tune back in 1999 during a vacation with his father in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.  We had been going through a rough patch in our marriage at the time and he was in a very reflective mood, to say the least. Steve sang the tune to me when he returned from his trip and I thought it was a masterpiece.  It wound up on my 2007 CD “Breaking Through” and went on to earn two spots on the 2009 Grammy ballot for “Best Country Song” and “Best Female Country Vocal Performance.”

Texas Tears

This is another tune my husband penned that I knew for certain was a winner the first time he sang it to me over 20 years ago.  We almost had our guitar/vocal demo of it picked up by a Nashville publisher back then but things didn’t quite work out.  It’s been so wonderful to finally introduce this incredible song to the world in all its glory.  And I couldn’t be prouder to say it’s been a No. 1 hit on AirplayExpress for several, consecutive weeks.

Bluer Than the Bluegrass

When this song was pitched to me by songwriter R.C. Landes and his daughter Karen Landes, I was over the moon about the idea of producing it.  I signed it to my publishing company immediately and began recording it shortly thereafter. To me, it’s a great example of old school country with a modern twist.  My fiddle player Christian Ward, one of Nashville’s most sought after session musicians, took the tune to a whole other level.   Christian began playing for me in the studio when he was 13 and boy, has he ever blossomed into an extraordinary talent that I am so fortunate to have on my team.

The Sun’s Coming Up Over Memphis

Quite often, the best songs are those written around the dining room table with your co-collaborators.  That’s exactly how this tune came about back in the mid-1990s.  My closest friend in the world, Kathleen Brennan, had jotted down some clever lyrics and showed them to me and my husband Steve one hot summer night.  It took Steve about five minutes to come up with a melody and after that, I fine-tuned the lyrics. The song, which was featured on my first nationally-released CD “Breaking Through,” peaked at No. 9 on the New Music Weekly country chart and has received an unbelievable amount of radio play worldwide.

If I Love You

Many of the demos pitched to me aren’t all that great but the one for “If I Love You” was phenomenal.  It actually had a guy singer on it who sounded quite a bit like Elvis.  I immediately connected to the traditional country feel of this song, which was written by T. Randell Karber. I couldn’t wait to start recording and producing it with all of the cool ideas that were running through my mind, including adding some Jordanaires-style harmonies. One DJ commented that “If I Love You” is a “grower” and I think that’s a pretty accurate way to put it.  For me, the more I listen to it, the more I love it.

Christmas Without You

This stellar holiday tune was originally commissioned by the legendary Patsy Cline, who recorded several songs written by my friends Lawton Jiles and the late Charles (Buster) Beam.  According to Lawton, Patsy had asked him and Buster to write a Christmas song for her and they went to it immediately.  Patsy loved how “Christmas Without You” turned out but her label execs weren’t quite sold on the idea. They wound up asking Jiles and Beam to rewrite new, non-seasonal lyrics and the song became “How Can I Face Tomorrow?”  Patsy recorded it but it did not perform all that well once it was released to the Cashbox chart.  Lawton said the songbird was heartbroken over not being about to give her fans a Christmas song. In 2008, he told me this incredible story and asked if I’d like to record the tune in its original form.  I didn’t hesitate to say ‘yes’ and what a great decision it turned out to be. It’s safe to say this is the song I am best known for.  In 2015, it was named by Sweden’s largest daily newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, as one of the Top 25 Christmas Songs of All-Time.  I was the only Indie artist on the list alongside the likes of Merle Haggard, Otis Redding, Mariah Carey and other music superstars.  When I saw my name on that list, I felt like I had truly made it.

Leader of the Band

Over my career, I’ve only recorded a few cover tunes. Me and my talented friend Patrick Hurd, a singer/songwriter from Port Huron, Michigan, worked on Dan Fogelberg’s “Leader of the Band” over SKYPE and then recorded each of our parts in separate studios. After we released the tune, we received an email from Dan’s high school sweetheart, who had somehow heard it on the Internet.  She was very complimentary and said she knew that Dan would be thrilled over our interpretation of his classic hit song.

A Fool’s Name

I am connected to quite a few virtually unknown songwriters who are incredible talented and deserve much more credit than they have received.  Such is the case with Denny Robinson, who wrote “A Fool’s Name” years ago.  It tells a wonderful and moving tale about the power of true love and also showcases Denny’s ability to write unique and compelling melodies.  As story songs go, I believe this is a master class in songwriting.

I Want to Stand Where Jesus Stood

Along with penning “Christmas Without You,” Lawton Jiles also wrote this bluegrass-inspired tune that was featured on my 2007 “Breaking Through” CD.  It went to No. 1 on Europe’s Hotdisc gospel chart and has been well-received by fans and radio hosts all around the world.  It’s another example of Lawton’s great songwriting abilities and I am extremely proud to have this world-class song in my repertoire.

All I Ask Of You

A while back, I was hired to sing “All I Ask of You” at a funeral.  I was reluctant at first because I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to find a backing track to this magnificent Andrew Lloyd Webber song.  Ultimately, I  decided to create my own accompaniment track with my studio musicians.  In the process, the recording began to unfold more beautifully than I could’ve ever imagined.  And most of all, I was amazed at how well this Broadway musical tune translated so well into a country style.  Beyond that, it stretched me vocally and I feel like I took another few steps forward as a singer.

Darcy Farrow

By recording the Steve Gillette/Tom Campbell tune “Darcy Farrow,” I joined the ranks of over 100 artists who also have done so over the past 40 years.  Legendary singer/songwriter John Denver deserves the credit for making the song famous and he certainly delivered a soul-stirring version. Most of the other covers are slow to mid-tempo, so I wanted to do something completely different with the arrangement.  I decided to drive the tempo to accentuate the very catch feel of the melody.  Halfway through the recording process, the idea popped into my head to add some clapping during the solo and that turned out to be my favorite part of the tune. It’s always a lot of fun, as well as challenging, to take a song everyone knows and make it completely your own.

There is A Foundation (Filled with Blood)

When I was considering songs to record for my 2007 CD “Breaking Through,” my producer Eric Uglum asked if he could choose one for me.  I was very excited about that idea and was thinking he would perhaps pick some obscure folk tune, as he’s really into those. When Eric suggested “There is A Fountain” by William Cowper, and played me the spectacular arrangement he came up with, I couldn’t have been more pleased.  That being said, the vocal range of the centuries-old song kind of scared me at first.  I knew I would have to work very hard to sound good on all the big, belting notes in the tune, as that kind of singing wasn’t really my forte. I practiced the song hundreds of times before going into the studio.  In the end, I delivered what I believed to be the best vocal of my career up until that point.  What a wonderful learning and growing experience it was.
