Independent Superstar And Recording Artist ‘Allen Karl’
Allen Karl is a traditional country music artist who began his career at the tender age of 14 in Pottsville, Pa. Thanks to a local radio personality, Willie Whistle, Allen was given his own show on Saturdays on WPPA radio. During his high school years he had a band called The Shuffles which performed at local events and festivals in the area. At the age of 17 he won a talent contest at the Santa Fe Ranch and was signed to a recording contract with King Records. What followed was a whirlwind introduction to some of the biggest names in country music, opening for such artists as Skeeter Davis, Jeanne Shepard, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Eddie Arnold, Wanda Jackson and the inimitable Patsy Cline.
Allen then enlisted in the Air Force and became a pilot, serving our country in the Viet Nam War. While stationed in the Orient he also played music in a band on his off times in Japan. After returning home, Allen married his wife Darlene and raised a family of 4, but never left his music.
He and his band, The Canyon River Band, performed for many years traveling through the U.S. Allen has shared the stage with so many of the greats along the way…artists like Johnny Cash, Hank Thompson, Ann Murray, Vern Gosdin, and Faron Young, just to name a very few. In 1978 his song “Gonna Buy Me a Camel” hit the charts and did quite well.
Allen counts Jim Reeves, Eddy Arnold, Waylon and Willie as his musical inspirations. In the mid ‘80’s Allen lived in Nashville for a while and performed weekly at the Opryland Hotel in the Staircase Lounge. In 1987, Allen bought Century II Records, LLC. based in Nashville, TN. Since then his focus has been to promote and try to keep traditional country music alive. His motto is “keepin’ the country in country music”.
At first Century II was just Allen, known as the Good Guy in the Black Hat. But now the label boasts 2 more chart busting singers for Century II. Bobby G, Rice of “You Lay So Easy on My Mind” fame and Donna Cunningham. Also on the label is newcomer Julia Neville. Cunningham thanks Karl and states that without his help and belief in her, none of her success would have happened. Together they have earned 4 #1 Duets since 2012.
In 2009 Allen’s CD My Final Rose was the CD of Year in Europe. He has garnered many #1’s in the past few years, such as “Face of Love”, “My Final Rose”, That Jukebox Has a Mind of It’s Own”, “Lonelys Only Bar” to name a few, and has penned many of them himself such as “I Get So Lonesome” and “Don’t Tell Me Your Troubles” And in 2012, his song “Butterflies” written by legendary songwriter Jerry Foster was #1 in Europe and liked so well that a line dance contest was run in several countries with the group from South Africa winning the title. He has done 3 music tours in Europe, doing radio interviews and concerts in 8 countries.
Recently Allen has become a member of the Midnite Jamboree Association at the Texas Troubadour and is also involved with Dean Holman and JK Coltrain’s new endeavor the Music City Hayride presented also in the legendary Texas Troubadour Theater in Nashville. He is constantly finding new ways to help traditional country music stay current.
Allen’s story simply comes down to the fact that he lives and breathes traditional country music and has spent his life trying to help keep it alive. His career has spanned decades and he has made many friends along the way. In short, he says he wouldn’t change a thing.
